The Verona Arena is a Roman amphitheatre in Piazza Bra in Verona, Italy, which is internationally famous for the large-scale opera performances given there. It is one of the best preserved ancient structures of its kind. The building itself was built in AD 30 on a site which was then beyond the city walls. The round façade of the building was originally composed of white and pink limestone from Valpolicella, but after a major earthquake in 1117, which almost completely destroyed the structure’s outer ring, except for the so-called “ala”, the stone was quarried for re-use in other buildings. Camera used: Nikon Coolpix E3200

I live in the UK and in 2011 when I joined Red Bubble, started experimenting with different settings and angles. I enjoy finding suitable pictures of flowers, Scotland, reflections, lamps and seats and have now branched out into different subjects.
In 2013 I finally realised my dream of visiting Australia and New Zealand. Whilst there I purchased a Pentax camera so have been able to expand my portfolio of flower macros among other new and exciting subjects.

Looks a lovely building Lesley, and such history also.

  • Thanks Richard – it is amazing inside. The acoustics are fantastic. I saw opera here for the first time ever and it was brilliant. (the seating was a bit hard though – stone “shelves” for 4 hours!!!!)

Interesting read and a fabulous shot, the red really pops and I find the Egyptian quite intriguing in this setting

  • Thank you – the Egyptian was a prop for one of the operas. They are all stored out doors around the back of the arena, although this one was on the front
