We always puzzled over this name for the area near the cathedrals, which we always found to be open.
Most houses close to cathedrals and parish churches seem to be called Church, Cathedral, etc Close so it’s a reasonable assumption to call it this. However, in this instance I checked on google. Usually the houses were originally the dwellings of the Church dignitaries.
