    That is also another name for them.
    They are also referred to as emots as well.
    There isn’t a “proper” name for them though.

    When I used to chat on IRC with a program called mIRC over 10 years ago we all called them Emoticons. I think this new word for them is the new lazy peoples way of saying the same thing . Soon they’ll just be referred to as EMOs umm err wait thats taken allready lol
