I like to create surreal photomontages, sometimes political, sometimes satirical, often downright weird and hopefully amusing. I question the nature of ‘Reality’, challenge stereotypes, and seek to undermine the dominant notions of Western culture. My artistic influences are; Dada, particularly John Heartfield, Hannah Hoch, George Grosz, Marcel Duchamp, and Surrealists such as Rene Magritt, as well as more contemporary artists like Cath Tate, Peter Kennard. I am greatly influenced by the illustrations and animations that Terry Gilliam produced for Monty Python, and by Python itself, and in turn, Bertolt Brecht. I also love the work of Chinese artist, Kenneth Hung. Oh, and Gilbert and George too.
I am also interested in Graphic Design, in terms of composition and use of colour, symbolism, iconography, and the way in which pictograms have an innate ability to primevally communicate directly with the mind, in a way that words alone cannot. A picture is worth a thousand words. Visual language is Mankind’s primary form of communication. Having said that, I am also interested in typography, and see letters as shapes. I am interested in the concept of text working with image, and text as image.
