Looking on a late night sea
I thought of Divinity;
And saw in the waves a power free,
And strong; beyond humanity:
Then thought of God, and thought of Man;
“What is Man that Thou art mindful of me?”
As great waves roar, and spit and slap,
Deep sounding against the moonlit shore;
And saw again the majesty: its Creator also made me;
As sweet moonlight with gentle ease
Shone down upon the sea,
That some was black and some was white,
Yes, crystal and silvery,
That each in its sphere could still declare
‘God, Creator God, and Master of the sea
Is still the God of sweet moonlight’
Stealing across as far as eye could see:
And then the wind, so fresh an strong,
‘Tis His majesty that comes to me,
And how this God of awesome might
Cares for all who ride His sea
Even as they trust strong in His word
“I will always be with the:”
So what is Man great God to Thee,
When Thou hast made the awesome sea?
