This the first of my Sugar and Spice Series. I was inspired by looking at the work of a young artist and how she took a very popular style of drawing and made it her own. She just plunged in with what she was going to draw and stuck with it. I suppose some of the artists do this as well, I just realized how much time it takes me in planning and then deciding if I like it or not.
With this drawing, I liked it but after trying to get the colors brightened for the purpose of online presentation, some of its charm (if I may be so bold to add) seems to get lost somewhere.
This was drawn on cream colored drawing paper (12×9) with fine tipped black ink and colored pencils. My intention was to make these Sugar and Spice illustrations with shades of gray and sepia. I found that slate gray has a hint of blue in it which was great for the other illustrations but sort of ruined the integrity of what I was trying to do. Nevertheless, I was glad to finished with first 7 of them.
