The rains had come at last (Flash)
This is an old one. Believe it or not, in 1990 I had to write an “essay” for English class entitled “The rains had come at last”. Since I hated writing the obvious, I came up with this little story, and blew my teacher’s mind. I was 15 at the time. The story had just under 300 words so I trimmed it down quite a bit to make it flash-worthy.
‘Tu looked up at the orange sky. The three suns sat in a triangle just above the horizon, turning the purple mountains red with their glare. He futilely scanned the sky for clouds, hoping for rain. He had no crops, but the animals he hunted needed water.
A shadow moved over him, and he scuttled into the safety of an overhanging rock. It was the caretaker, a mysterious entity he could never quite see.
The caretaker placed a few animals on the ground and withdrew. ‘Tu crouched and sprang onto the nearest of the animals. It struggled until he bit it; then it became limp. ‘Tu dragged it into his shelter.
Michael placed the insects in the spider cage and watered the plants. Then he replaced the orange cover.
‘Tu had heard the drops falling, and looked out of his shelter. The rains had come at last.
