I know that you were not there
When I took my first step
I know you never heard me
when I cryed myself to sleep
I’ve never come to understand
Why you were never with me
To raise me high upon your shoulders
To pull a leaf from high from a tree
We’ve never walked hand in hand
Or gathered seashells from a shore
But i’ve learned down through the years
I could’nt have loved you more

I wonder where are you now
Are you far out to sea
Has your heart ever been broken
Have you ever thought of me
Where are you now
Are you a rich man or poor
Don’t you know it dosen’t matter
Because I could’nt have loved you more

On that special day
When friends had fathers to share
I’d find some place to be alone
And pretend that you were there
Just sit and think of some things
That you might have had to tell
Then i’d buy you the perfect card
Slip it in the mail
I guess they’re still there—- Somewhere
Packed away, Forgotten — all 44
Each addressed " To Dad" and simply signed
“I couldn’t have loved you more”

This is an homage to my father and to things may have been. The last time I actually saw him, I was told, was when I was almost two.
