As all Englishmen (and women) will know, tomorrow, the 23rd of April, is St George’s day.

Sadly, we don’t make such a fuss about it as do the Irish of St Patrick (they actually have a public holiday for him) but we English are expected to be so downbeat about it, possibly on the grounds of ‘being politically correct’.

The Daily Mail ran this article about our Saint’s day, and although I don’t buy papers anymore, I can’t help but agree with most of what has been put forward.

I didn’t post this journal by way of sabre-rattling; far from it. All I am trying to say is that we, as an island race, are growing a little tired of being told what to do by our politicians. Just where is the problem in having a national holiday to celebrate St George.

Even the artist who designed the famous engraving that has become part of the gold sovereign has his initials included in the design (see the enlargement).

PS I find it odd that the group ‘This is England’ won’t allow any journal entries (you can’t add more work to this group – there is a limit of 0 journal entries).

where you can vote for national holiday, and even say whether you’re going to take a day off.

Here’s a short extract from the home page that says that it is not out of any racist or anti-religious reasoning why we should have a national holiday on St George’s Day:

England lags far behind the rest of Europe in the number of bank holidays we get. A bank holiday on Saint Georges Day would be a great opportunity for all the English (regardless of colour or religion) to recognise what binds us together – instead of concentrating on our differences.

This is a time to celebrate the life of our Patron Saint.
