Artist's Description

Right across the street from the California State Capitol building is the Senator Hotel. I don’t know when it was built and it’s not currently listed a landmark or monument. But it was a place where those “smoky, back room deals” were worked out between politicians for years. If those walls could talk!!!! LOL! The only part remaining intact inside is the Grand Ballroom immediately behind these front doors. The rest is office space, I believe.

There’s one other thing of note about this rather dreary architecture: Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme (b. 1948)

A middle-class childhood in the suburbs around Los Angeles, a cheerleader in high school, Lynette Fromme (aka Squeaky, because of her voice) was your typical all-American girl-next-door… until she met Charles Manson on Venice Beach in 1967. She became his lead disciple – she believed (and still believes) that Manson was the Messiah whose teachings could save mankind from Helter Skelter (Manson created a firestorm of controversy by saying ‘The White Album’ by the Beatles was an influence). After the Tate-La Bianca murders placed Manson in prison for life, Fromme became worried that the world would no longer listen to Charlie. With this in mind, she planned to commit a crime for which she would be arrested and put on trial, where he could appear as a witness and preach to the world. She attempted to assassinate President Gerald Ford, September 5, 1975 as he left the Senator Hotel in Sacramento. She failed to load the gun properly (there was no bullet in the chamber), so she was subdued by the Secret Service immediately without a shot being fired.

Convicted for the attempt 1975, Lynette was sentenced to life in prison. She is currently housed in the Administrative Unit of the Federal Medical Facility at Carswell, Texas. Originally housed in a prison in San Diego, she was later transferred to the Federal Correctional Institution in Pleasanton, California which she escaped from, briefly. Since that time she has served time in the Federal Correctional Institution in Alderson, West Virginia, a maximum security prison in Lexington, Kentucky and a maximum security unit at Marianna, Florida.

Update: January 1st 2012

This image has been purchased in multiple “high formats” well after the original upload to Red Bubble, the most recent being January. 1st 2012. I don’t know who made the purchases or why but I am extremely honoured to have person(s) so interested in my work they invest in it. I’m also humbled by the fact that almost nothing was done to shoot the images other than aiming my Nikon D80 on a tripod and using the most basic editing software. This is as “raw” as anything I’ve produced in 12 years of digital photography. Yet, its appeal is deeper than all but one other image (“sno-globe”) in my gallery.

Thank You, unknown buyer(s) for your purchases! Your interest in this image, especially on the first day of a new year, makes me proud to be an artist. :-)
