Tower Bridge raised (Sacramento, California USA) by

Sacramento’s Tower Bridge, shown here raised for the passage of larger river craft, is modeled after San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and is beautifully lit in the night outside of Old Sacramento, California.

The shot was taken in a stiff, freezing wind (which seemed to make everything look more crisp) with an Olympus IR-500 point-and-shoot, long before I had a DSLR. The camera was on the nighttime preset and it did all the adjustments save one: this camera has no way to attach a tripod so I was braced against a light post, pressing the camera down on its concrete pillar, and shooting bursts to get whatever I could. My eyes were watering too much to see the display or the results until I got to the computer.

The processing program was Corel’s PaintShopPro XI which was used for mainly for perspective correction and removal of some stars.

Thanks all! This shot took a LONG time because the wind was so damned cold I was wearing gloves and my point and shoot doesn’t even have a tripod option! I literally pressed the camera onto the side of a lightpost to minimize the shaking and took maybe 30 shots because my eyes were watering too much to see the camera’s 3" display. LOL! The colours are an odd feature because someone decided that making the bridge a sort of [vomit] green colour would make it look better. With the night lighting only, it looks spectacular. Catching the bridge raising was just a wild stroke of luck.

And thank you three, too! I’ll probably have work like crazy to get a shot like this with a DSLR but I will try sooner or later. But for a treat right now, check out this shot from oastudios. His version is almost from the same angle as mine and is also a nightime photograph. Enjoy!
