Artist's Description

Nobody solved this Bubble Jeopardy question so I’m revealing it and hereby declaring myself a WINNER!!!

This is the product of one of the longest 2.8 seconds of my life. The shot is was taken from somewhere between 14 and 18 inches BELOW eastbound lightrail train traveling at about 35 miles per hour while looking upward. In other words, the camera was under the moving train and this is a blurred image of a train belly. :-O

I wasn’t exactly sure what the results were going to be so I told myself ’I have more than one camera in case this winds up as simple a SD chip recovery mission after the train blows the camera to bits. I positioned the Panasonic Lumix in the centre of the track, just after the asphalt slope of a road grade crossing (the one so carefully documented and found by Kriss). It was set to run in movie mode and as fast as it could shoot frames, or about 30 frames per second.

I had to wait about 1 minute after I set the camera on the tracks before the train reached a point where I was sure it wasn’t going to stop when the conductor knew the train was either going to straddle or smoosh a tiny camera. 1.8 seconds later, the train had passed, my camera was still running intact, and I looked both ways before retrieving it.

At first blush, one might say something like “of course the train would straddle the camera! There was plenty room. There HAD to be or the train would have been scraping the ties!” True that but I wasn’t sure the ground wasn’t going to move, such as the weight of the train may have depressed the crossties enough to bounce the camera upwards onto the belly of the train.

At home I extracted a single frame that looked cool, 1/30 of a second of video, changed it into a picture file, uploaded it, and made a lot of people waste a great deal of time making me feel undefeatable!

There are times when I can’t remember the agony of defeat. At those times, I do the same things that failed repeatedly before. This is one of those times.

Now THIS is a toughie and I am absolutely certain nobody in Red Bubble has seen this before. In fact, I’m willing to say “nobody that has ever been in Red Bubble has seen this”. If I’m THAT sure, you can bet your first 5 or 10 guesses are not gonna solve…

What Is This?

Here are the things you need to get sorted out:

1) What sort of photograph is this? Easy: high-speed action

2) Action of what? Some people will have immediate guesses if they’ve followed my work over the last 12 months. They MIGHT be correct. ;-)

3) How was this image captured? (When you see the video of the entire capture, you will know the true meaning of ANYTHING To Get The Shot.

1st hint: remember I have more than one camera. Hehehe!)

2nd hint (and there will be at least one new one after each 10 tries, maybe sooner if I have pity. HA. Not): One of the people who should know from combining the image with the clues and comments is good ol’ Clippy. :-D

Aw heck. I’ve been (rightfully) accused of teasing the masses. To make amends, I offer a 3rd and 4th clue sans charge: the subject of the image was traveling about 35mph and it happened within 6 inches of here: 38°34’9.65"N, 121°29’14.55"W. This last clue will nail at least 90% of the question. :-D If you have Google Earth or any other GPS (‘global positioning satellite’ device, including the one for cars), you will be “down to the stems and seeds” in seconds. And if you were born before the 60’s and know American slang, the answer to your question is “no”.
