I’ve mentioned the ongoing monetary distress California has been having and its impact upon my life and the lives of my friends. While wandering about the State Capitol grounds in Sacramento, I noticed the Christmas tree was still up. There was a lifting machine to assist with the removal of decorations but they were all still in place as well. I’m pinching pennies while the state searched for, cut, transported, “erected”, decorated, lit (using electricity), then undecorated_, loaded and hauled away 80 feet of now *_dead* waste. I couldn’t find anything poignant in the overall moderately depressing tableau. But looking into it a bit closer brought out some colourful irony. You may need a bit of imagination to find the 2nd level of irony but here are both of them as seen thru my camera on January 10th, 2010, 4:14pm.

Nikon D90 w/ Nikkor 18-105 lens
Exposure: 1/40 (I bracketed a ton to get one I liked)
f/stop: f/9
ISO: 200 (baseline for the D90)
Focal length: 90 mm (I found “shoot low, aim high” hid me from the reflection while also showing the most of the building so I went for a pretty high ornament)
Metering mode: spot (I’m not sure if I was better off aiming for the surface of the ball or for the reflected building. I went for the…)
Full manual with no Nikon ‘on camera’ creative preset

What an excellent capture, Lenny! And, yeah….it’s a definite commentary on the situation. Well spotted and well taken!

  • Thank you very much! And the avatar is the best of the best, in my humble musical opinion. ;-)

Creative shot Lenny! I have seen similar w/ other subjects reflected, but not w/ a building.

  • Thank you, AuntieJ. :-) I did the same shot at least 30 times with as many different balls as possible so I’d be sure and get as many colours as possible. Vista said this one is mostly blue and I agreed so the puns were all opened up from there. LOL!

Stunning – and what a great reflection in the big bauble! Very Christmassy – beautiful.

  • This is an odd one for me, both being holiday related and composed in advance. I’m very happy you find it beautiful. :-) I’m thinking of submitting it (or throwaway edits like it) somewhere within the state government. I’m certain it would get as many ‘yucks’ as ‘chucks’ from politicians on both sides of California’s budget problems. My guess is more women would get the dual pun and a laugh; more guys would hit the delete button as soon as it became visible. LOL!

  • One of my favourite songs just as ironic as they come. I loved Louie and he’s about the only person I can imitate singing. Try to get a copy of him doing “Bess, You Is My Woman Now” and you’ll either cry and laugh or laugh and cry. Either way, the Louie Armstrong version of Porgy and Bess is highly memorable. ;-)

He’s one of my faves too, Lenny… his voice, his gift… wow! I will look see if I can find that song – I have heard it – I think I may actually have it on CD somewhere… xoxox

Wish you could see how beautiful the colors are in this. Very nice! :)

  • Thank you. And I can see a LOT of different colours so no matter what ones they are, this tree was decked out. I stopped using the Vivid preset on the Nikon when things look like this before I get them in the computer. I’m beginning to think the onboard preprocessing might be messing with my computer’s settings. I also changed the colour pallet from RBG to the Adobe pallet to make my camera as compatible as possible to my software. So far, much better. :-)
