Unlike the goat with the aspirations to be a rap star and the “rock star” alpaca, this rock star is probably gonna make it. The little boy was 2 years old and his older brother (13 years old) was a beginning drummer with a kit, no lessons, but sheer natural talent. This kid watched his brother so carefully that he was able to mimic the proper hand positions for holding drum sticks and playing the snare and hi-hat. Better than that, he was able to do different things with his hands, playing quarter notes with his left and eighth notes with his right – while they were crossed!

I can’t say I had a hunch but I hope I had some sort of feeling that the kid wasn’t just a possible future drummer but also a natural keyboardist. I lay my Casio AX-1 keyboard controller on the ground and offered to let him play it. He sat down and proceeded to do absolutely nothing musical with the striking exception of his hand positions: he’s using his fingers not his entire hand. The concept of playing individual notes with separate fingers in both hands is a concept that’s usually taught in the ‘1st Grade’ educational tools for students – not the beginner books, that concentrate on using a single finger to make the proper sound. I don’t know if he got it in the seconds of watching me or if he got it from watching anyone else but he already grasps a concept that some people never master and both of their hands ALWAYS do the same thing at the same time. :-D

Who knows what will happen in time. But right now, a two-year old kid has the tools to be both a drummer and a keyboardist without a single lesson for either.

Notes: The Casio was not ‘MIDI attached’ to my keyboard because I was performing on my keyboard with my left hand at the time I took this picture with my right hand. The kid was sitting in front of me, in the stage area. Had he been actually playing, it would have sounded like the typical 2-year old banging on a keyboard. LOL!

The event was an outdoor wedding and both brothers were friends of the family for the groom.

The Casio is an old piece of equipment – one that the thieves that recently ripped me off didn’t bother to steal – that is all but indestructible. Letting the kid bang on it was reasonably safe tho his mother almost has a heart attack before I told her it was OK. :-)

The rest of the band was not amused. LMFAO!!!!!

thats a great pic, and a great read.
and i want one of them for my music making..

  • Well, creating a kid is rather easy but there are much easier ways to make music. ;-) Seriously, the remote is a fun “instrument” and when it’s fully untethered and MIDI-enabled, you are so free that you can do anything you want onstage. And tell guitarists to buzz off! LMAO!
