Good ol' #3
An exact replica of Dale Earnhardt’s car was displayed at Capitol Park Sacramento, CA this last weekend. It was a bit more than spooky since I watched Dale’s final race “live” and the crash wasn’t even remotely fearsome. In fact, it was so tame the announcers and cameramen stayed focused on it only because it stopped the race. By the time I knew how deadly it was I was reading it in the morning newspaper.
I wrestled with what to do with this shot. It is a memorial tribute so I leaned towards monotones but the background was impossibly busy with fans and sightseers. I blurred the car and felt I was blurring the memory as well. So I settled upon blurring the car – Dale’s car – in time by taking the current day bystanders out of focus. Using the selective editing tool is a nightmare when everything has the same tones, hues, colours, lines, contrasts, etc. I suggest anyone interested in trying it ask me for the original shot and I’ll give you a crack at it. If you’re better at it than me, we’ll call it a collaboration and I’ll substitute it for the one. :-)

Great shot of a car with many, many wonderful memories of Dale.
Thanks for sharing.. :-))

Thank you, Gavin, :-) I was always into Indy car racing but I think it was Dale who got me interested in NASCAR. So few people rise to a level that crosses all the boundaries and Dale was one of them. And what he did for the sport has turned into a gold mine because EVERYBODY racing has a personality now; no longer are they “the driver with no face in the Number # car”. No longer is it “Left Turn Racing” or ‘neck-car’. Now, it’s just universally FUN. :-D

no need for a collab Lenny that is really well done my friend
and a fitting tribute too
Bravo

Well, I thank you very much, Kriss. I get a feeling it’s still a bit too dark but I’m happier with the overall treatment today over yesterday. One of the reasons why is the number and type of groups in Red Bubble who accepted it. I was all prepared for a round of REJECTED! notifications and didn’t get a single one. :-)

Cool shot and treatment in memory of an Outstanding Race Driver!
Lenny La Rue, IPA replied
Earnhardt Sr. was an unwitting ambassador of stock car racing. If he had never driven, I’d still be watching only the Adretti family in open wheel cars. :-) And I’m very glad true long-term racing fans like the tribute.

Looks to me that you chose the right treatment.
Lenny La Rue, IPA replied
Thank you. In the end, I was really happy with the choice of treatments but not my execution so much. But looking at it as a whole on a Red Bubble page, I too like it. I didn’t mark it up tho. If it sells, it will sell solely as a tribute piece ‘at cost’. That seems like a fair enough compromise for leaving the colour in. :-)

Lenny, great shot, it has the feel of “tilt / shift”. Good shot.
