lichen drop 1

lichen drop 1

I said I’d get the hang of using the 10X magnifying lens after my tiny frog shots showed only a tiny dot of sharp focus in the centre of the focal point. I also said I get a drop of water as clear as humanly possible and top ‘sno-globe’. Honestly, I thought I had it with the shot of the drop coming out of its own icy base, part of this same shoot. But I think I better captured what I was really hoping for with ‘lichen drop 1’. Please let me know what you think (as if you wouldn’t! LOL!) and if it’s not worthy of my patting myself on the back, I’ll pat harder & lower and try again. :-D

Taken at Cathy’s home in the forested area immediately beyond her back field (Penn Valley, CA), this photograph is of the tip of an oak tree with the moisture the night’s fog left behind. The lichen seem to thrive in the winter frost and dampness so the colours here are from very happy lichen the the tree branch. The camera was focused by physically moving my body and the camera into the point of focus within the drop. Between the slight breeze, my own breathing, my heartbeat, pressing the shutter release, and finally going with the timer but the shutter itself opening tossed the focus! Setting the tripod was an exercise in frustration because tightening any plane caused the composition to change. And the ultimate insult was having the shot completely set up and I bumped a neighbouring branch, causing the location I’d fought to shoot to bump into the lens and cream the drop. Arrrghhh!!!!

Finding a new location and this drop was like a dream – the worst nightmare possible. I was FREEZING but still wearing gloves, a ski jacket, a sweatshirt, AND a t-shirt. I could do everything with the gloves on but the camera could be less than 1mm off and everything sucked. In the end I got the shot without the tripod, without bracketing, without fighting the wind, my body, or the rest of the tree. I set the camera, pressed the button, and let it shoot until the buffer filled about 5 times, praying I’d get at least a couple good ones. Of about 50 shots only this one is in focus to this degree. Well, God gave me one so I’d better not complain about it, ya know? ;-)

I’d say this one was worth freezing your arse (and anything else) off for, it’s beautiful. The droplet looks like glass, the lichen is beautifully coloured and DoF is perfect. You can’t get much better than this.

I thank you, Jan! I’m darned happy all the way around for a change. LOL!

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

My smile is true because the ends of my mouth turn upwards like a dolphin. But that’s OK since people think dolphins are happy too. LOL!

Wow, what a fantastic shot, Lenny! I’d say all your hard work and suffering was definitely worth it! I love this – added to faves. I’m glad you posted your story about it too. I like reading them and hate it when someone just posts a photo with nothing at all about it, not even where it was taken. Well done!

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

Well Rachel, you are most welcome! I’m usually a bit verbose and try to limit it to less than 10,000 words but sometimes I can’t help it and my typing just runs on and on and on, sorta like the Energizer Bunny without all the cuteness and the energy and the pollution caused by that kind of battery. See? In less than 10 seconds I can bore the ever-loving LIFE out of you. LOL! But seriously, thank you! :-D

Love the old ‘body move’ focus-rail trick and great capture Lenny

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

Thank you! You must be under the age of ANCIENT because you can still hold your body still enough for this technique. LOL! I now know that I’ve got to have something better in the way of a tripod, maybe one of those trigger-handled units because I could die of hypothermia to get The Shot! LOL!

  • Lois Bryan

    Lois Bryan

Oh, Lenny, it’s gorgeous!! Now, I have to ask, when you say 10x magnifying lens, do you mean an additional lens, almost like a uv filter, that you add to the existing lens? Reason I ask is I got one of those for one of my lenses last summer before I gave up and got the 60mm macro lens. And if you’re talking about that thing I have … then you go right ahead and pat yourself on the back. That thing of mine nearly killed me. I know EXACTLY what you’re talking about as far as trying to focus is concerned. The dof is non-existent with those things!!! So YOU, my friend, did a FABULOUS job!!!!!!!

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

That is exactly what I’m referring to and it was all but useless in a situation like this one. I wasn’t even worried about DOF since the SUBJECT was never in focus. LOL! But I paid less than $30. I bet you could add a zero to the end of than number and STILL not be able to buy what YOU got!

OK, a question for YOU. I was less than an inch from the ‘filter type’ lens’ edge to the drop. Does your 60mm need to be that close or does it just GET that close with the imagery? 60mm sounds like a long way away compared to 10mm. And does it have image stabilization or are you forced to use a tripod no matter what? Either way, the shots you get are stellar so you’ve mastered whatever approach you use. :-)

    Rosemaree

Love this macro Lenny BUT still love snow globe more… sorry mate…

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

Thank you. And I can live with that. :) sno-globe is more ‘simple pretty’ and this is more along the lines of detail of lichen, which isn’t all that pretty, per se. I guess I love this one because it tried to kill me – same reason I love women in general. ;)

Awesome shot! Great use of the 10x magnifier.

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

Thanks much! I was soooooooooooo disappointed when I learned the magnifier wasn’t wide angle but it will do fine for the tiniest of subjects if I can get the focal range correct physically. The Nikon just doesn’t know what to do with what it’s seeing. LOL!

love the story and the awesome results ! Great shot !!!

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

I thank you very much! I’m still learning the new pocket rocket for my macro shooting, the Panasonic TZ4, but I hope to manage at least something worthy of sale before 2020 (when everyone who’s alive gets to have perfect eyesight!!!!) If not, I now have the macro filter for the Nikon DSLR’s so I can do drops, which is about the only thing you can do with a cheapo filter instead of a $2000 lens. The focal point of a filter is about the same size as a drop of water and everything else looks like fungus or shot thru a fisheye lens. (sigh)

There have been tiny sales to date but I still need to get over that initial $100 limit to be able to get a check from Red Bubble. I’m figuring I’ll have perfect eyesight first… ;-)

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

I appreciate that, Normf. :-) I can still look at this shot (and the edited series of about 10 shots) and feel OK, if not thrilled, about it. As they say, each of us is our own worst critic. But I always thought of critics as the most discriminating of the helpful commentators. LOL! Wow. I might be my best worst friend. Scary!!!!
