wet window two

wet window two

I was going to give all the details of each part of the ‘wet windows’ series. But alas, [stuff] happens. (sigh)

A few months ago, one of my two very old desktop computers died a sudden and painless death. It and I had been sharing electricity for 6 years and it took the brunt of my computer learning on the chin/circuit board. I found out what jumpers were by adding multiple disk drives, upgrading over and over again but needing to guess where to put those darn little plastic thingies every single time. We went thru Windows Service Packs and their perils. We survived without even one serious infection thanks to Zone Alarm and FIVE (yes, I know) virus and spyware programs. And we lived the the Dark Days when I used to (gasp!) surf the web for freebies. Then click and silence. I’m not saying ‘goodbye’ yet tho. Anybody know how to install Linux?

On Sunday, the second desktop computer followed the first to that place wherever dead computer brains go. It’s usually like that in real life when a partner dies but I guess computers feel some sort of bond too. These two should have since they shared a keyboard, mouse, and monitor for a pile of years. LOL!

I’m not crying – much. I have someone anal retentive safety habits so I know my back-up habits were at least ‘upper colonic’. About 80% of my files were safely backed up, which means 20% are history without paying someone serious bucks to recover them. Not gonna happen.

Two things bring water to my eyes. One is the lost programs. Some of them are impossible to replace like DVD X Copy Deluxe. I purchased it legally about a heartbeat before the Feds said it was illegal and yanked it. Unfortunately, it must be activated by an online computer that no longer exists so the legal disk is worth as much as a coaster with a hole in it. Actually, that’s what it is but that’s beside the point.

Number two of the eye-wetters is all of the ‘wet window’ files went with the hard drive into Hard Drive Hell. They were in there to be archived in the external hard drive when the system crashed. I ALWAYS check my files when transferring them from place to place, making sure they arrive safely. They did. But before I got them into the external drive, I erased them on the SD card from the Nikon because I was going out on another shoot and didn’t want to “risk them in the camera”. Bad idea. Hard lesson. Oh well.

This shot was taken using the information I saved to get the first shot accepted by the camera and learning groups in Red Bubble. As a testament to my documentation, it worked on another day, another lighting, and in a slight drizzle where I covered the camera with a hand-held shield and took the shot anyway. Woo hoo! However, all the previous work – except for the single shot I uploaded immediately – is lost. In fact, Red Bubble is the ONLY place where “wet window one” exists as there is no longer a master. LOL!

“wet window two” was fun and I will redo the entire series because it was both educational for me and fun. But you’re gonna have to wait a while longer for the rest of them cuz it’s about 20 degrees here so even if it doesn’t rain/snow/hail, my happy ass ain’t gonna do it yet. :-D

I’m skipping all the Nikon D80 details this time so sue me. Hehehehe!

PS I goofed setting the D80 for black and white so Corel did the honours. ;-)

PPS I really like this shot as well as the other so I’m giving it away ‘at cost’ for anyone who wants it.

PPPS If you read this far, you are also going to be eligible for a end-of-year gift: December 20th to December 25th, ALL art on my front page will be available at Red Bubble’s cost, or whatever Red Bubble charges for what you want. Some of the art will be my best work and, if you’re really a fan of mine, Bmail me and maybe your request will make the front page too. :-D

This is a personal ‘thank you’ to all you fans & good friends who have made my Red Bubble experience such a fantastic set of months. And yes, not even one year has passed and I’m just shy of 30,000 views of my art. :-D There is no other place on the planet that can offer a “rookie photographer” exposure like that. :-O Bless you all and thank you once again!

wonderful image .. great story too .. sorry about your computers

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

You are a darling but it’s OK about the comps. As long as I keep my job (not quite “a given”), I’m doing better than many unfortunate Americans. After all, can a computer actually die if it was never alive? NOPE! Shove a new hard drive in it and it won’t even remember it had a previous non-existent life. :-D

Ohh computer problems just are terrible! Wasn’t long ago that my motherboard and power supply blew on mine. All I asked was that the repair guy save my hard drive. Easy enough, he jerked it out and put it in a new tower/system. Works for me. Been up and running like a charm lol. I hope your luck gets much better…....btw….....very unique image!!!

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

Thank you, Tara! Your experience is actually rather unique since most of the time a computer crash is a “crash and burn”. LOL! But as you can see, I’m still online and if it came down to no laptop either, I’d find another way to stay in contact with great people like you in my Red Bubble family. :-)

I added (and corrected. LOL!) text in the original post. The “PPPS” might be something of interest. Or not. Heck, I don’t know! I just post the stuff and pray! :-D

NOTHING stops an artist but the Blue Screen of Human Demise. However…. OMG! LOL! Nevermind the Crimble but what curves are you referring to? :-D

great shot, had a house fire a few years back, the hard drivers from the melted computer are still in use today. Bought a USB box that one can put a hard drive in. They have been in and running since. Hard drive are tough little things. If you have a virus, you may loose what is on them but they still work after a format.

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

Thank you. :-) I suppose I could reformat both drives but the only way to do it is in a running computer – something of the desktop variety – which is something I don’t have now that the SECOND one bit the dust. No viruses unless I got hit by a “zero day” (brand new one that the protection programs hadn’t blocked yet) sucker. Other than that, I only had one drive fail in 8 years and that one was defective.

On second thought, you got a “naked” USB box for an old drive and reformated by just plugging that into a working computer that found the ‘new’ drive and allowed it? If so, that would be SWEET cuz I could do that with the laptop. Woo hoo!

Congrats on your work and sorry for all your hi-tech troubles. Major pain in the arse. This is a lovely image, Lenny.

Love the image! :D I have every confidence that the second series will surpass the first.
So since it’s non-existent life ceased, where can I send my non-existent sympathy cards and the imaginary flowers?

    LOL@karirose…
Sorry about your computer woes LL…is there anything I can do for you? Oh…we run a computer repair business… But judging by your narrative you already know alot about them! If they lasted 6 years together Lenny… then they’ve had a long and happy marriage in the computer world!! : )
Now onto the photo : ) ... It’s fabulous!! I love the B&W… and the movement of the water with the droplets bouncing off the bottom of the window frame is lovely : ) Well done.. and Happy not even one year anniversary : ) I’ll always be a fan…Wen xox

  • Lenny La Rue, IPA replied

Awww, that’s kind, Wendy! I don’t know much about computers but I’m basically an extremely curious guy – both in the intended way and the implied way. LOL!

I’ve looked at this shot for years and tried to take it once in full daylight from the sunny side. I had no clue what I was doing other than trying not to blow out the brightness (which I did anyway). This time I got what I’d first seen 21 years and 4 cameras ago. :-D

And your being a fan for the “not quite a year celebration” is just too funny for words! It reminds me of people who celebrate 24-hour anniversaries, 1-week anniversaries, 1-month anniversaries, etc. I think they do that until one of them threatens to create the 1st-day anniversary of The Big Fight. Hehehe!

    Hahahahahaha….. geez..I know that date..it’s called a wedding anniversary!!
