"Out on Loan"

Leith O'Malley

"Out on Loan"

I recently exhibited this collage at a local gallery as part of a small group exhibition.
It was almost a last minute decision but I was keen to show something a little different from my usual oil paintings and with a degree of spontaneity or stream of consciousness about it.
I decided to collage a lot of old book stub receipts from a local university library where I have been going for years (not the uni, just the library) for inspirational books by artists and writers.
There’s a montage of those stubs here along with collaged parts of my paintings (canvas) and prints, quotes, mistakes, ink, charcoal, pastel, spilled wine, newspaper, part of a letter from artist George Gittoes, a photo of my dad when he was singing in circuses, poetry, Kandinsky’s theory on art and my own theory (an American dollar note).
I must say I was inspired by redbubbles very own Herkissable and the recent postings from her journal to actually publish this (it’s been a while :)
Anyway, enough of my rambling.. here it is.. my mixed media collage and a few close ups for good measure..
Thanks for dropping by!

Splendid work, Leith. I love collages but have never tried to do one. I think I’ve been too browbeaten by all the splendid ones around. This is no exception, but this one inspires me to have another go since it is not piled up with the contents of a gift shop or someone’s bottom drawer or worse! My compliments on an great portfolio!

I love it when artists really get personal with their work and this is intimate Leith. I love all the stubs you have kept and included in this, it really adds some history and interest. The focal point with the portrait totally draws me in and has me wanting to follow around the figure to see whats gone on in his world.

I am sure we are in tune you know. It was only a month ago I had to do a collage piece for a school project and I had such fun layering and working the objects. I also see you mention Kandinsky…..well I used him for a tutorial and while I am not a huge fan of his work, I thought his Colour Theory was very interesting and well worth a read.
    Beautiful work Leith x
