Waiting for Inspiration

Waiting for Inspiration

I have produced hundreds of scribbles, sketches, drawings, cartoons and paintings over the years, yet when someone asks me how I come up with ideas for work I tell them I’m really not sure. A truly original idea for a piece of art is always a gift from somewhere else, and you just hope and pray it might happen again. I have thought about this subject a lot, about where inspiration or stream of consciousness comes from. The result was a large oil painting titled “Waiting for Inspiration”.

It portrays a painter sitting on the floor of his studio adjacent to a large blank canvas propped up against the wall. A dirt road runs through the middle of the room, past the canvas and off into the distance.
The painter I guess is me, waiting to thumb that lift, to take that ride, to catch that inspiration.. before it passes through.

Thanks Melody, I’m quite humbled by your response…it’s very nice to hear it struck such a chord with you.

It was a frustrating time when I just didn’t know what to paint next.. lost for ideas.. painters block..
I decided to do a painting about that very thing – not being able to paint.

The shadow says it all really (pulling my hair out)!

This picture says so much … it’s worth a thousand words (and more!) Really meaningful and easy to relate to for all of us artists. Love the symbolism of the pathway. There’s so much dimension and details to this, and yet you created it with a touch of whimsey that I just love. Really cool colors and composition.

We’re all identifying with different bits of the picture, as our link, aren’t we? The design caught my attention. The glass of red makes me smile. ( I allow myself to drink that after 5 p.m.. That’s when I get creative in weblogs and virtual forums!!) I like the hopeful way you’re looking down the road!

love this picture. we all wait for inspiration, don’t we?i see myself right there, waiting and waiting in front of a blank canvas, throwin in one brushstroke and then another. sitting down in disappointment hoping that inspiration will come and take me up with him to greater heights of artistic expression…..i love the clock on this picture: symbol of time passing while waiting…....WELL CAPTURED MOMENT

Thought provoking…perhaps the painting on the far wall isn’t a painting after all…but a view….when I have no inspiration it seems like a desert.

The little road signs are so clever. I am drawn to the light beneath the canvas and the fact that it is midafternoon in a windowless room. Your lovely work of art is thought provoking. I enjoy everyone’s perception on a common theme.

  • Leith O'Malley replied

Thankyou Sharon, you live in a beautiful part of the world and your images reflect that. I came close to going to Maui once but alas it was only Oahu :)
It’s nice to read you took the time to really look into and comment on this piece.. and I appreciate that!
