I tried something new this time. PhotosByHealy was kind enough to give me the link to some very interesting tutorials. And as I saw those tutorials, I got artistic fever and “saw” the artwork I could make and just had to do it.

For the past 2 years I was burried deep in the photography and learning all the tehniques and rules, trying to get the maximum from my equipment ansd myself. I needed something like this to move away a bit from all the curves, color correction, noise removal and sharpening :)

Since this is my first trip to this style, I’m not very objective, and I would appreciate any feedback I can get. :)

The alteration of this photo is inspired by the earlier mentioned tutorials. All the time I was watching them I had this photo on my mind. The photo is hdr from 2 exposures processed in Photomatrix, then altered in Photoshop CS2.

The story behind this church:
This now abandoned church stands in the refugee settlement just outside small village Pisarovina. This is located in central Croatia, just few kilometers from where the defense line was during the war (1991-1995), along the river Kupa. During and after the war in this settlement lived people who lost their houses and the ones whose homes were on occupied teritory. The houses in the settlement were donated, but this church was built from scratch. It is made of wood, with very simple interior and almost no decorations. It was in use for almost 10 years. Today, it is abandoned and locked. The settlement is empty, the houses are falling apart. People returned to their homes, some of them relocated.

I have two passions: interior design and photography.

I was interested in photography all my life, but I started to learn about photography only couple of years ago.
I’m self taught and internet taught and consider myself serious amateur.

I use only simple point-and-shoot camera: Canaon PowerShot SX100IS. In my current circumctances I am not able to buy DSLR. So instead of whining about it, I decided to do the best photos possible with that camera, despite of all the limitations.

Marina, this is gorgeous! Which tutorial did you follow to produce this gem?

Congratulations on your feature in Photo Painters. It is well deserved recognition.

(P.S. Thanks for the plug. <Smile>

  • Thank you :) First I did line art and left onlylines of the church, then I used what I learned from Pattern stamp Tutorial. Only I played around with different brushes and downloaded some great spray brushes. They are great for that soft look of the sky and for adding texture :)

Congratulations on being featured. The effect is beautiful and suits the photograph and the story behind it. Everything fits together perfectly.

  • Thank you so much :) I’m quite happy how it turned out. As this was my first try, I played around quite a bit and wasn’t sure what will be the outcome :)
