After watching Avatar and being totally blown away by the graphics, as well as everything else, I just had to try to create something which illustrates the sense of flight over huge cliff faces and deep drops I also wanted a sense of, “Other World” which retains enough of the familiar to link with memory and meaning.

This one was unusual for me, in that I had no plan or sketch to start with. I started in Painter and just blocked in rough shapes and waited for something to emerge from the mist.. :)

The geometric shapes hopefully suggest large, cliff-like structures, which show signs of having been fashioned by forces other than Nature, The small, possibly humanoid type figures, help to give a sense of scale.

I am also testing a wider angle in portrait mode

My artwork ranges from the traditional, to the slightly offbeat.

With the wildlife and landscape, paintings, I like a more photo-realistic approach, with light, colour, emotion and a sense of space, being key components.

My cartoons are a little quirky, with themes and styles varying according to mood.

Same here Tom, Avatar must be the best film I’ve ever seen for many reasons – not least the imagination and 3D artwork. The story was pretty good too. Love your inspired flyers and the subtle figures down below.

  • Thanks Brian. You and I are on the same wavelength. Exactly what I said to my wife – “best film I’ve ever seen.” She loved it as well, and she doesn’t really like Sci-Fi -What a movie. Happy New Year Buddy – hope you are happily inspired to keep creating your wondrous worlds and excellent,. “Portoons” :)

    Unbelievable brilliant art work Tom,
Haven’t seen Avatar yet. Just bits on TV.
    Cheers Neil

  • Thanks Neil. I enjoyed doing this one…am thinking of linking the two bugs and having a rider between them. Take yourself off to see Avatar -that’s an order :) You will love it. The scenes of flying and flight are awesome.

I must admit Avatar had that effect one me as well, and I am far… far away from that sort of over graphicised style, but… yeah… anyway, these critters you’ve put together are somehow more appealing to them old ways, spiffier, of enjoying such journey, bravo!

  • Thanks Myn. My lil Critters thank you for the love :)
