Lance

A “portoon” (Portrait cartoon – not a common term. in fact I have never heard it before, so I may have coined a new word. If not, someone please let me know :) I have found that the realistic portrait type treatment of the head and cartoon treatment of the body quite popular with clients. The caricature with distorted features is fun for everyone else but not always for the person who has to live with it :)

Thanks butchart. I am hoping to do more of these as they are fun. It was actually a gift for him as he has helped our family a lot over the years. He doesn’t mind me using it as a promo for my work, which is cool. :)

think you have coined the word Tom. I haven’t heard it before and yet it is so apt. Great image – how does he stand upright with such a large cranium? LOL. Good work.

  • Tom Godfrey replied

    He’s got a big saw. :)

Portoon! I like it Tom. Just wondering, can we take it a bit further and for an English portrait/cartoon call it a pomtoon? Actually I’m with you in not risking hurting someone’s feeling about caricaturing the face – it’s safer to play it straight and make the rest of the image a cartoon. Flattery gets you everywhere.
I like your Lance a lot, Sir Godfery. A great portrait beautifully painted. I can’t make up my mind what medium your used.

  • Tom Godfrey replied

Thanks Sir Brian. :) pomtoon yeh. I see you apply the same logic. I used Madam Nita as my medium. She channelled in some acrylic brushes, washed in a separate layer for the background and cleverly used the cover pencil for some natural effects. Oh yes, just before the candles were extinguished she also floated in a digital airbrush and a blender tool….must fly :)

Just thought Master, this portrait is sure to be a spitting image of your subject so would that make it a ‘spittoon’? Madam Nita doesn’t sound like a happy medium – maybe she’s been burning her candles at both ends.Where’s me medicine….?
