The Skybus is late

The Skybus is late

I was playing around with a sunset photo I had taken, when I got the idea for a planet similar to Earth, populated with humanoid type creatures who find something to grumble about regardless of the situation. Their conversation might go something like:

I can’t believe it Zhrikplatth, that’s the third time this Dasnuba that the skyhop has been late.

Keep your veins in, Krryp, at least we can enjoy another methane sunset while we wait.

Thanks Resisto. I spend so long drawing and changing the characters, that I have lots of time to explore their world in my head :)

Brilliant!! – “Dang that forgetful Skyhop!!!” Love the worlds you create… they oooze with creativity and talent… Are these built in photoshop?

  • Tom Godfrey

    Tom Godfrey

thanks again Lyndsay -you really are as crazy as me :) – couldn’t afford photoshop. I use Corel Painter IX and a Wacom graphics tablet for all the drawing. I often start with a pencil concept sketch. I would love to get into graphic design one day, so will no doubt have to learn the Adobe suite…do you use photoshop?

  • Tom Godfrey

Now this is special! I’m imagining this world now … I think those humanoids would shuffle rather than walk … it’s a warm and dank world … and the humaniods don’t like other aliens – they’re a bit cantankerous.

  • AbyssalSoul

    AbyssalSoul

Nice! I’m a fan of sci-fi and the creatures looks neat too. With all the cloudy environment it feels pretty dreamy and alien too.

  • Tom Godfrey

    Tom Godfrey

Thanks guys. Peter you have summed up the image well – I agree with your observations. Thanks again Cliff and AbyssalSoul. I feel that with Sci Fi we get a chance to glimpse possible futures for ourselves or present time for someone out there. It has been said that anything humans can imagine, they will one day create. History certainly bears this out.

How do you create this work ? I mean what techniques do you use, it’s truly something !

  • Tom Godfrey

    Tom Godfrey

Hi Jame, thanks for the positive comment – normally I do a pencil concept sketch of any idea that seems facinating, scan it, then spend hours playing in Corel Painter – I use a Wacom graphics tablet and draw wth a plastic pencil :). This image was a little different, in that the sunset clouds were from a photo I had taken near our home in Johannesburg. I basically drew onto the photo. I added the two characters in the foreground last, on another layer. I made it up as I went along and did not have a pre conceived concept for this one.

Wow… I love this. Im seriously considering looking into or at least trying out a drawing tablet, since I like to draw but cant really do so in photoshop with a mouse, and I dont really like to do so with pen and paper, since its not so easy to undo things. This resulted in me doing a lot with photo editing, and I feel I can do almost anything regarding photo editing now, except draw in or add completely new things, like you have done here. This photo or image as it has become, is really beautiful, so fantasyfull and fits right into my imagination. I love it!!

  • Tom Godfrey

    Tom Godfrey

I’m glad you like it Christiaan. I agree with your comments re the mouse – its like drawing with block of cheese :) the graphics tablets are excellent- I use the Wacom 3 tablet with Corel Painter- a brilliant set of tools to work with. I can highly recommend them. I still use pencil and paper quite a lot and don’t really bother to rub out too much. if you are stuck somewhere like on a train or waiting for your wife, like I do in a coffee shop :). then pencil and paper always comes in handy – no more long boring waits for anything. I scan the image I have drawn then keep it as a layer underneath and draw on top.

You really do use colours so well—I noticed that in your other works too. Great image.

  • Tom Godfrey replied

thanks bm. I used to struggle with colour and I still tend to overdo it and get the balance wrong, but it is good to know that I may be getting more right than wrong now :). cheers for the comment.
