The City
As you can see from the concept sketch, I made quite a few changes for the final redition of “City”. There may yet be another story hiding in this sketch…originally entitled, “Wasted” :)

It was late when the gates of the old city appeared. I kept “Frog 1” on auto pilot, just to note the changes and to enjoy the reflected purple haze through the newer sections and over the old walls. The giant air bladder at the base of the ancient entrance was partially illuminated. It was two decades since they had been installed, ringing the city with life-giving bubbles. With plants having long disappeared from this world, their function was crucial. The only greenery now was from a type of red and green algae which grew along the cold rock faces. It was sad to be reminded of the past, but it was good to be home once more…
The City belongs to the following groups:
Abstract Realism, Alien Worlds and Landscapes, Digital Brushstrokes (Max 3 per Day) and Sci Fi Available for sale asGreeting Cards, Matted Prints, Laminated Prints, Mounted Prints, Canvas Prints, Framed Prints and Posters

Brian Towers
You really are a true master at creating these ‘classic’ scenes Tom. Beautifully composed and with that magic lighting you manage so well. Love the highlights and reflected lights – love it all in fact. I do like your constraints in not using too much of what’s available on computer graphic programs. Your works are solid and believable, and above all, painterly.
Have to say though that ‘giant air bladders’ did bring my mother-in-law to mind.
Tom Godfrey replied
LOL What a card you are Brian. It’s 11:30pm here and my laughter may well have woken the neighbours. Thanks as always for your positive, humerous and so well constructed comments. re Painterly. I am trying to keep the energy of looser strokes, as I too often fall into the over rendering trap. I do like to try to create believable worlds, which makes the looser style more difficult – for me anyway :)

Very neat. Interesting insight to the “future”. No plants, that is sad to be reminded of, but then it is also nice to be home.
Tom Godfrey replied
:) only a possible “future”...I guess I hope to prick a few minds into action before it’s too late. Thanks Atheum

Tom, this is great!! A question – how do you make things look huge? I have a painting underway and for the life of me I can’t make a statue at the waterside look huge against the rocks, and the mountains behind just look like another bunch of rocks…I have a horse and human small nearby but makes no diff… (the “air bladder / mother-in-law” got me going too lolol)
Tom Godfrey replied
Hi rightasrain, thanks. re huge – a number of things I guess. 1 scale – try to place something the viewer would recognise -like a human form in front of the statue – the smaller you make the human the bigger the statue looks. 2. the lightest lights and darkest darks are closest to you, so mute the colours and tones more as things move away from the viewer -less contrast and detail. 3. Overlapping shapes also help to push things back. Hope this helps a little
cheers for now -Tom
Tom Godfrey replied
:) air bladder -Brian is a card of note – great artist and very funny man.

I must check him out, Tom lol. Thanks!

This city might be located below the surface (Atlantida?)-hence the fish, jelly-fish-like-creatures swimming around it….Or it might be imaginable city That Never Existed….Or it could be The City from outer space….I just see the variation in colours and details/objects circulating around the walls/castle? Yes, I wish I could put it on paper…..

Hi Tom
I love your concept sketches, are they always done with a wacom? but how do you get from there to these super finished realistic looking sci fi scenes? Is it all clever digital stuff? If so, what program do you use? I noticed one person commented that you don’t use over complicated techniques – now that I can relate to!
Tom Godfrey replied
Hi Mimi. Thanks for your interest. I have just re-linked the original concept sketch next to the final pic at the top. Must have got lost in cyber space. Don’t know about clever digital stuff. I normally just scan the original sketch then choose a colour theme as a background layer. I then push and pull and smooth and redraw for about 10- 30 hrs. If you know of a quicker, cleverer process, let me know :) Nah I quite enjoy the feel of digital painting and am not all that much into the collage type cut and paste stuff, although some of those results are brilliant.
