I Dreamed You Dreamed Of Me
subject: This drawing was inspired by a dream I had a few nights ago, in which I was walking through a park at night and came across a naked man sleeping under a maple tree.
There was more to the dream than I’ve drawn, but the key symbols and their meanings according to dreammoods.com are as follows.
NIGHT: To have a dream that takes place at night, represents some major setbacks and obstacles in achieving your goals. There are some issues in your life that you are facing that are not too clear. You should put the issues aside so you can clear your head before coming back to it.
PARK: To dream that you are at a park, represents a temporary escape from reality. It indicates renewal, meditation, and spirituality. It is also an indication of a readjustment period after a serious personal conflict or an ending of a passionate affair.
MAPLE TREE: Balance, promise, practicality.
NAKED MAN: If seeing a naked person in your dream disgusts you, it might signify anxiety about discovering the naked truth about that person or situation. It may also foretell of an illicit love affairs, loss of prestige and scandalous activities. On the other hand, if you do not have any problem with another’s nudity, then it implies that you see through people and accept them for who and what they are.
SLEEP: To see others sleeping, is often a reflection of yourself and your own unconscious mind. It is indicative of how you may not be alert or informed about a particular situation. It may also beckon renewal and new beginnings. (I am moving to Melbourne in a few weeks.)

Very nice, wondering how it will evolve into color, and possibly grow in context from the dream that you had. Take care, keep in touch, Peace-
Lee Wilde replied
Thanks Robert. Colour hadn’t entered my mind until I read your comment, but you’ve got me thinking….hmmm…
When you say ”...grow in context..” do you mean using the dream as a starting point and developing the idea/story further? That is very tempting, but for once I’m trying to keep my (somewhat controlling) conscious mind at bay and staying true to the scene conjured up by my unconscious mind.

this is lovely lee, full of emotion.
Lee Wilde replied
Thanks Rose. I do feel my works have gotten more emotional this year. I’ve found that associating each piece with a particular song…and playing that song over and over and over while I work (much to the delight of my housemate) has helped me to “loosen the grip” of my conscious mind and draw more easily from the heart. In this case, I searched YouTube for 4 hours until I found the song I feel most closely evokes the atmosphere in my dream.

Lee Wilde replied
Great minds…hahaahaha
Yeah, more and more I’ve been finding colour distracting. If I have to stop to try and make those decisions….I dunno….I kinda resent anything which brings me back to reality when I’m “in the zone”.

I LOVE this piece of artwork. And I love the fact that it’s in b/w; forces me to not ‘know’ what;s going on but question: what IS going on in her mind about this man/situation.
Thanks.

Lee,
You’re either dreaming ‘in Gauguin’, or the spirit of Gauguin visited you in a dream, or there is indeed a universal language of symbolism. Whatever the case, spooky!
Mike Paget
Yes Gauguin mixed blended with Rousseau
