The famous tales of the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine are known throughout the world, with travelers from all over coming to seek the legend and experience the mystery. Lost Dutchman State Park is located on the Apache Trail. The Park provides views and access to the most scenic portions of the legendary Superstition Mountains.
The “Dutchman”…a miner by the name of Jacob Walz…was not actually a Dutchman. He was a German immigrant. He came to America in 1845 and soon heard about the riches and adventure that were waiting in the frontier beyond New York. His first gold seeking took him to a strike in North Carolina and from there he traveled to Mississippi, California and Nevada… always looking for his elusive fortune.
The Superstition Mountains are the result of intensive volcanic activity. While hiking in the Superstitions, one can sometimes hear rumblings similar to rolling thunder. Geologists say this results from seismic activity resonated by the canyon walls. This could explain the origin of the Apache legend that these mountains are the home of the thunder gods. Whether you drive or choose to hike, the botanical variety you will see is just as breathtaking as the mountains and calderas it grows on and around…a mind blowing variety of flowers, cactus, and trees.
