~ Wairoa ~
‘Wairoa’ was previously the home of ‘Marbury School’.
It was a location that was central to my life for around 26 years as my former school and work place and as such, is a place that holds an infinite number of memories for me.
The property was originally purchased by William Austin Horn in 1888, on which he then built the two-story Victorian mansion. The gardens are over 100 years old and are one of the last remaining Victorian style pleasure gardens to be found in the Adelaide Hills.
Wairoa was also used as a location in Peter Weir’s classic film adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s novel ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’. As a 5 year old student, I remember sitting on the lawns above Wairoa watching them film :)
