King Spider Orchid - Flip Top Lid

King Spider Orchid - Flip Top Lid

Caladenia tentaculata (Syn. Arachnorchis tentaculata) taken on Mount Barker Summit in the Adelaide Hills 23-10-08.

I love the the shape of this orchid as it is nearing the end of it’s life & the labellum flips forward. Also love the fine little spider webs, that can just be seen…a spider orchid seems an appropriate place to find spider webs :)

King Spider Orchid – Other common name – Eastern mantis orchid. Botanical Name Caladenia tentaculata (Syn. Anachnorchis tentaculata), and previously mis-identified as Caladenia dilatata.

Suffering for my art

Not long after taking this photograph, I was kneeling down to capture a back-lit subject & was so engrossed that I failed to realise that I was kneeling in a bull-ant nest!

I screamed like a girl & ran back to the path, where I carefully put my camera down, then jumped up & down like a maniac frantically swatting them all off me…..

King Spider Orchid - Flip Top Lid belongs to the following groups:

Australian Native Orchids, Australian Native Plants-2 per day, Only Orchids! and The Adelaide Hills Available for sale as

  • LeeoPhotography replied

Hi Alex! My knee is fine :) It was more the fact that they crawled up my legs & were in my shoes & sox, which I had to take off to get them all off!
