It’s a bugger that it’s such a small file, but I’ve only got the one lens a 17-85mm, which is not ideal for a macro shot! A 70-300mm & a macro lens are on the list, along with a decent tripod etc etc! lol!
Hey Leanne, I’ve got a Tamron 90mm macro lens and it’s very sharp. Medusa was taken on my 5D with the Tamron and has had very little sharpening applied in PS. I’ve also used a Canon 100mm macro and it too is very sharp and focuses alot faster then the Tamron which is an issue because they also make lovely portrait lenses (both of them). If you are talking about canon’s 70-300 f4 5.6 mk111 “consumer” lens, think again. It’s a very cheap piece of junk. Don’t waste your money. I had the mk 11 version years ago in my film days on an eos 500 and it was rubbish and they say the mk11 is better than the mk111. The resolution of the 400D is way above the optical capabilities of the 70-300 so you won’t be getting the best out of your camera with rubbish glass. Think Canon 70-200 f4 L IS if you can afford it. It will be around $1500 but worth every penny and if you stick with Canon you will have it forever. It will also fit on a full frame size camera like the 5D, so when everything moves to full frame (I’m pretending to be a prophet here LOL) you won’t have a bag full of useless lenses! Canon L glass really is that much better! I hope I haven’t spoken out of turn, I just don’t like seeing people waste their money. And I still can’t stop looking at this shot!!! :)
Hi Andrew, I can still read it lol! Always good to hear other people’s opinion too : ). You’ve got the Canon 100mm hey…...Drool! I think the 60mm will be more within my budget…..I guess there is always the Tameron, but I’m really happy with my 17-85 IS & think I’ll stick with Canon glass. Re the zoom lens….I know the glass on an L series lens would be SWEET, but it’s a bit out of my price range, and being a wee slip of a thing I think I’d have trouble holding the 70-200 for any length of time….. : ( It’ll be at least 6 months until I can afford it anyway, & as it gets closer I’ll research it to bits – I am mad about doing research! Which is what I did when I got the 400D & the 17-85 – drove myself & everyone around me crazy! lol. In the meantime I’ll just keep snapping away with the 17-85! ..... And I’m glad you like this pic : )
The 60mm EF-S is a nice piece of glass, good choice. (makes a nice medium telephoto portrait lens too I hear!) Well if you keep taking shots like this with the 17-85, you won’t need another lens. :-)
amazing how much you can learn just reading comments… i am looking at buying a dslr (one i am using is on loan), can’t decide between the canon 400d or the nixon 80d – so hard, am also driving everyone around me crazy! btw fantastic photo!
Thanx for the tips AB. I have a Tamron 90mm (given to me by my friend matt Mawson) & I got the 70-300 for Christmas. I don’t get consistent shots from the 300 but I think it might be me & not the lens. Lee gets some wonderful pics with her 17-85mm….she has a great eye for composition.
Andrew – Thanks again for your advice – always welcome! I may pester you for some more in around 6 months time! Thou I fear I my choice will be dictated by $$$ & what I can comfortable hold!
Nicole – All the best with your research, but you’ve narrowed it down to 2 good cameras to choose from, so I don’t think you’ll be disappointed either way, but like Andrew said get the best glass you possiblly can! And as you like to take portraits ask around which camera / lens set up will suit you best for that ; )
Sharon – You’ve taken some wonderful pics with your 70-300!
Awesome macro photo! A macro lens is also near the top of my wanted list! Btw, the 70-200 f4 L predecessor of the IS version is excellent, you could probably get one for a good price. I have one and the optics are stunning (and its quite light really).
This really is one of the most amazing macros I’ve ever seen. I love how you really can’t tell where the bees legs and flowers stamen end – they see to blend together as one. Just amazing. Perfection.
WOW!!! awesome shot, i love the way the colours blend in. If you have interest in bee pics, check out some of mine… I’m still new at this so be nice…lol.
