A Sunburnt Country
The title is taken from the poem ‘My Country’ by Dorothea MacKellar, which was written in 1906.
100 years on, with the terrible drought conditions in Australia and the disgraceful state of our precious Murray River, the Coorong and Lower Lakes and other vital waterways, and our government’s lack of a meaningful response to global warming, the words ‘a sunburnt country’ start to take on a new meaning for Australians today.
I for one do not love a sunburnt country and ‘the wide brown land’ is not for me.
The image of the ‘Black Boy’ grass tree is a xanthorrhoea quadrangulata that was photographed on Mount Barker Summit.

Well done Leanne. Represents the state of things well and yes, I agree, I don’t think Dorothea MacKellar would have wanted our land to get as ‘sunburnt’ as it is.
Excellent work.

Thanks Kathy :) Yes, I mean no disrespect to her wonderful poem or its meaning, I am just trying to highlight the terrible drought conditions we are facing, and the fact that 100 years on her words hold a different meaning for Australians in 2008.

Yep, that about sums up our country at the moment (and I fear that it will not get any better).
A beautiful image in its own right Leeo, and a stark reminder of the state of our planet.
