This water colour pencil image is done on 22 by 15 inch Arches paper. I worked from sketches and photographs done at a plein air session with my painting group at Shuswap Lake, BC, Canada. While most members of our group were painting the lake vistas, I was drawn to a secluded corner where two birches stumps sat among a profusion of greenery – wild plants such as burdock and Solomon’s seal as well as irises and lupines. With thanks to artist Pat Taylor who invited our painting group to her beautiful lakefront home and studio.

birches, forest, shuswap lake

I have become an active artist since retirement. Water colour pencil is my major medium, and my subject matter is the beauty of nature – in the many countries we have visited, in the wonderful landscape of my British Columbia home, and in the memories of my prairie childhood.
