The flowers of a water lily are always such gracefully poised things. The large pads, with their intricate network of interweaving, fibrous webbing on the underside are said to be able to support the weight of a human baby without sinking. This one is located in a courtyard pond at the conservatory at the gardens.

Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square, Pennsylvania May, 2010.

What a beautiful flower, Robyn. Wonderful shot!

  • I hesitated on this one for about two months now, Mike… but I do like it… thank you!

It’s got a very nice pastel look and matches the water in the background. Works really well! :o)

  • The color of the water is mostly a reflective result, I think, as the bottom of the water pond was black. I was happy to see it picked up the lavender and purple hues. Thanks again, Mike!

I didn’t realise they were fibrous underneath – that explains a lot. I love the interplay of colours between foreground and background here, and the translucent feel of the flower.

  • Thank you, Panda! Big frogs sit on them, but I guess I never thought they weighed enough to sink them.. but they are very strongly woven underneath.. and it makes a cool pattern…
