As I was wandering among the garden flowers late this afternoon, I discovered this big bumblebee that seemed to be in some kind of distress. He was sitting on a pink Zinnia when I found him ‘resting’…. and not busily working like most bees do. He seemed a bit groggy… and lethargic. I touched him and he moved a little…then I moved him to this red Zinnia flower… and he rallied a bit, buzzing and fluffing his wings and such, but still stayed put.
I think I witnessed a few minutes of the final hours of this dutiful worker-bee’s life… I took his photo to remember him by.
Many people don’t realize that without bees, our food supply would dry up in a matter of a few short years. Even with the intervention of man and the slow, painstaking act of hand-pollenation, two thirds of the people on this planet could die of starvation if we had no bees.
What a moving and thought-provoking image and write-up.
Good morning, Panda! (Afternoon for you… ) Yes, it was a sad thing to watch… and once again, as so often occurs with nature, I could do nothing to help him.
Beautiful image and very thoughtful write up, Lavender. Very few people realise the importance of bees and it’s very worrisome when you hear about declines in bee populations.
Thank you, Mike…so many people don’t realize the direct impact that we as humans have on the life cycle of this planet. By the way.. you may call me Robyn, Mike… it’s shorter to type, too!
Awww, Robyn … you know what?? I had the exact experience last summer … but I like to think that since it was late in the day, he was just taking a nap. Maybe the temperatures were such that it was a bit cooler and he needed to recharge before he flew back to his hive. Either way, you really caught such a gorgeous moment in time … marvelous colors … and your bee-buddy is so perfectly composed on these gorgeous petals!!!! Well done!!!!
Thank you, Poopsie! I really hope he was just resting… I thought about him several times that night and looked for him again in the morning,… I hope he’s fine!
