Derelict Farmhouse

On my way back from getting my hair cut on a Saturday morning in early February, I drove past this farmhouse and decided it was a unique place. I didn’t like anything I was getting from the main road, so I drove up behind it on a side road.
The smaller outbuildings seemed to carry most of the charm, so I tried to make them more of the focal point. I also did this one in sepia, and I do like the result, but in color it seemed to be adequately aged and rather sad, so I opted for natural.

BONUS Hobbit Huts on the property….

Thank you, both. I have a friend who dearly loves farmhouses and barns. I took this for her.

Excellent capture! This reminds me of some of the Amish houses in my area! Love it!

  • LavenderMoon replied

I suppose it could have been an Amish farm at one point. There are still cluster of them in this area, as well as Mennonites and a few Hutterites. Thanks for the compliment. : )

excellent….oops…Phooey already said that…but it is! absolutely LOVE that this is a 3story+ farm house! an awesome find….....wondering if it was every used as a boarding house due to the size? that lovely smaller building with the darker wood i think was the ‘spring house’........used for storing the foods needing cooler areas and the water…......not sure? but…maybe? this is just too neat!

  • LavenderMoon replied

Wow… amazing reaction to this little ‘farmette’. (A strange name that realtors add to smaller farmhouses) I’m really glad you like it. I have several more I want to shoot and upload. I’ll try to hustle on my days off!

Well that’s a very nice thing to say. I haven’t had much of a chance to peek at your work, since I’m at work myself right now. I usually only get to look on the weekends. But it’s safe to say I’m addicted, so I’m sure I’ll see lots of wonderful things. . : )

    A great find. Beautifully captured.
My son is a truck driver. I read in your profile that was your occupation. He still is and he carries his little camera around with him. He has not gotten anything like your work, but I encourage him. He drives here in Southern California too.

  • LavenderMoon replied

Some of my best photos were taken with marginal old cameras during my time as a truck driver. Tell him to stay with it a while. You find out pretty quickly whether or not it is something you want to keep doing. Photography, too. : )

Lovely image – I love the details in those deteriorating buildings – the stories that are slowly falling away with those old timbers… great capture!

Looks like it would have been home to a sizeable family. And now it’s deserted.
I don’t see any signs of vandalism or graffiti… is it well off the main road?

  • LavenderMoon replied

Actually, I believe someone still lives in it. It’s right on a main road, lots of cars go by each day. But in ‘main’ road, I mean it’s a main country artery… not near a city. Farming families often had many children to assist with the running of the farm, but in this area, there is the added religious aspect of not trying to prevent children from ‘blessing the family with their arrival’. Vandalism and graffiti are a rarity in the area as well… which I am grateful for. Thank you for stopping by, Gregory.. it was a pleasure to read your comments.
