Guarding the Booty
This Bluejay is one of several that have been appearing regularly at the rooftop cafe in search of munchables. They arrive before sun-up and begin picking the peanuts out of the mix first, and then begin swallowing the corn kernels whole. All the while, they are alternately squawking back and forth and the Mourning Doves are arriving, wrangling for position. Then the Chickadees, and the Titmouse arrive, darting in and around everyone else, while the Junko’s are happily bouncing around the perimeter snapping up the seeds that have been scattered about by all the activity of the others. It’s a busy place just before dawn!

These are feisty critters, I have the scrub jays and they seem to be the bully of the bird kingdom. There does seem to be a pecking order (pun intended) in the bird kingdom! Love the image! Dee
LavenderMoon replied
Yes, they can be quite the little snots, Dee! But I guess I like them for that… and their beauty…. at least they don’t kill other birds, that I know of… : ) Thank you!

Great capture, Robyn. Love the brilliant blue of their plumage. There’s always a full out pitched battle for peanuts between these guys and the squirrels over at my sister’s. Quite entertaining to watch and quite deafening at times, particularly when one of her cats wanders into view.
LavenderMoon replied
Haha! Yes, I can see where the cat would definitely add some excitement to the mix…. it gets pretty raucous outside my window at times. I haven’t seen any squirrels in a long while…perhaps I should try filling their bird-proof feeder… : )
Thank you, Mike!

Awesome image!! How do they digest that corn? LOL.
LavenderMoon replied
You know, Steph.. I wondered that myself… in a corn kernel… out a corn kernel…. hahaha!

Nice colours, a study in blue and yellow. I’m amazed he stayed still long enough! Btw, bird digestion is a crazy world, they gobble the food quickly, presumably to allow a quick getaway, and carry it in the crop (pouchy thing) – apparently you can feel whether they’ve eaten if you pick them up because the food is still there. It goes off from there at leisure, getting an acid bath to soften it, before reaching the gizzard, where it’s ground against the grit they eat, to break it down. So the “chewing” part happens at the other end of the process from us. Then it’s off to the intestines for extraction of nutrients. You probably knew that really, but …

Actually, you’ve taught me some thing about birds today, Panda… thank you!
