Oh wow Laurie,,, this more looks like one has struck a Black Pearl mine! wow the the opalessence of the bark and your keen edit!

  • Thank you Lina! It just seemed to look like the bark of two different trees – but on the same tree! Say, birch over top oak or some such thing! But the pieces that look like birch are so thick….when birch peels it’s usually thin, like paper. The other thing that I found kind of neat is the short, horizontal lines on some of the bark (that looks like birch) against the irregular diagonal lines of the bark below….

This is just full of designs & configurations, Laurie! A work of art to be sure. Years ago we used to collect large hunks of white paper birch bark that had fallen from the big birches up in Port Loring, Ont. The stuff made great postcards!

  • Thank you for the great comment, Sheila! The bark seems like two different kinds of bark from two different trees but it’s on one tree! Usually the bark on our birch trees peel and curl in paper-like sheets…pls read my reply to Lina above, ok? Thanks again, Sheila! :)

WOW … so this is not a birch tree? amazing observation Laurie!

  • I will have to go back and have another look…this was in a nearby forest….but our own birch trees don’t look like that….this tree looks like it has two layers of totally different bark ;) Even the pieces that look like birch – appear too thick…maybe it’s an anomaly?

  • just went out to have a look while walking the dogs….it’s definitely not a birch tree, Lina…perhaps once the leaves show up we’ll be able to identify this tree…
