~ The Philanthropist ~
He plays his harmonica
and hopes for change
Others walk by
beyond his range
with designer bags and shiny shoes
Denying poverty in all it’s hues -
A cardboard box
with nickel and dime
A curb side seat
above the grime
of urban street
where limos pass
in gauzy, glitzy surreal class…

But -
Now & then
A lady drops by
who often questions
The reasons why
Some are rich
And some are not
And some are clearly
quite forgot…
- She cares
though little she has -
She gladly shares.

- Sure – it’s easy to give a lot
When there is nothing to lose.
But – there are those who give
from the heart ~ and have
holes in the soles of their shoes…

One of the candid street shots that really stands out. It makes me so pleased that you saw and acted on the sight of someone putting money into the box. You must have been so quick. Cheers.Tony.

  • Thank you Tony…I have another image somewhere that is more common, of people with designer shopping bags & nice clothes walking on by….

This is a beautiful post, Laurie! It stirs the social conscious we all should feel. As Thanksgiving approaches, it is a good thing to be truly thankful for what we have, and what we have is wayyyyyy more than so many other. Your lovely poem goes right to the heart of humanity, and by “humanity” I mean not just people but the manner in which we treat people.

  • Thank you, Carol! And yes, we should be very thankful for all we have there are so many who have not

    Amazing heartfelt image…..

  • Thank you, Renata, what impressed me about the lady who gave was that she was touched by the plight of the street person when most passed him by…
