this is the sound of summer
crickets chirping one endless humm
with a short repetitive pulse
the smell of the first damp evening for a while
as last night’s rain fell to dusty dry paddocks
and now the moist grass flattened
by hooves and bodies of cows and horses
and the thud of the kangaroo tail
in evenings of stars so bright who could tell
how far they really are away from us
spin round three times beneath your heaven
make a spangled wish
’cause the new moon is days away
in the silence of pausing phase
and in a heavenly daze of spotted icing sugar
the sea of stars overhead
fills my thoughts
constellations take only seconds
to fall beneath black shapes of eucalypts
and the gravitational love of my earth
holds me gently to the ground
i feel my heart beat when i see shooting stars
and i wonder where the planet
gets its unstoppable energy from
somewhere within the deepest desire for life
as satellites glide like beads of oil
across the painted universe
we only see the surface of what there truly is

Beautiful writing, with a very feminine spin on it all ! Very creative and a great contemporary Aussie classic.
thanks reflector, your comments are greatly appreciated :))

I’m James, by the way !
Where’s Goldsborough ? Tasmania ?
Hi James, no it’s Queensland :) near Cairns.
So beautiful…. your words create a picture and leave a sense of wonder and reverence for who you are in relation to the earth and it’s creatures and the universe !!
Thanks shaneran, that’s such a great comment :)

This evocative poem, like so many before it, successfully and beautifully reflects the inner visions of the artist. In the context of the photographic world, which is my universe, and obviously to a large extent yours from the evidence I have seen, there is a corollary between what we see inwardly and what we see in our viewfinders. Thus the thrill of holding the eyepiece to our eyes and the excitement of seeing what is there.
