Thyanboche Monastery
Monks putting the final touches to a sand mandala at Thyangboche Monastery, Nepal. The mandala is made for the Mani Rimdu festival which starts on the full moon of October. It is later then ritually dismantled and the sand washed into the Imja Khola river which is a tributary of the great Dudh Koshi (milk river). This is symbolic of the transient nature of things. For the monks the beauty rests in the meditative process of creation.

Beautiful light! You can almost touch it…
Laurette Ruys
Thank you for your comments. The light was there for just a minute or two, ethereal.

P-e-r-f-e-c-t that the light was just there for a moment! Impermanence (spelling?!) Magnificent capture of that moment, and I like the wide angle-ness too, seems like the room is breathing in..
By the by, this is also where my ‘hot shower’ shot was taken!
Linda Ridpath
i can smell this and feel it and hear the horns, cymbals and bells. Brilliant, i want to go back!!!

What a stunnign moment to capture. I love the light. The time I was at Tengboche Monastry, the monks got the giggles in the middle of chant, I couldn’t help but giggle myself.
Your photo is stunning.

gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!!!!!!!! your colors are magnificent and I love the light beams!!!! I have a “funny” story about a sand mandella that was created here in the United States a year or so ago. Some monks were painstakingly creating one of these works of art in a public building. In the evening, when they left, velvet ropes, the kinds you see in movie theaters, were used to keep the public away. One morning, they arrived to find their work of art horribly scuffed up!! What had happened?? Security cameras discovered the answer. A young mother and her child were at the post office, directly in front of the monk’s display. As the lady transacted her business, her 3 or 4 year old son skipped away from her and … as all children love to do … went to play in the sandbox!!! LOL!!
Laurette Ruys replied
Thankyou Lois. What a cute story. I’m sure the monks would not have minded too much :)
Jeff Harris
Absolutely wonderful. You have a gift in telling stories in your photography. Any you really know how to use a fisheye lens to it’s potential.
Laurette Ruys replied
Thanks so much for the comments Jeff. I hadn’t had the fisheye long and Nepal was the first trip I got to experiment with it.
Craig Forhan
