This should never have worked. I first loaded the 8×10 sheet film in the holder backwards-base side out/emulsion side in. I have never done that before. Exposed film. Realized film was backwards. Put it in developer tray anyway. Then for reasons I could not explain I turned on the light. Left it on for about 10 seconds before I realized that was not recommended for a sheet of film in a tray of developer. Turned light off. Finished developing film anyway.
Film came out.
A little solarized but it’s quite a printable neg.
I cannot explain how that is possible.
I think the photo-gods like me.

Sometimes ‘accidents’ are so productive!!!! I like the solarization.

  • laurenrabbit replied

I make certain to take credit for any accident that works and blame any accidents that don’t on the capricious fates.

You’r work is stunning. I love that you do this in a darkroom. It would be wonderful to watch you work. You have an amazing eye!

  • laurenrabbit replied

I never let anyone in my darkroom because I have a tendency to dance around. Dark room, little red light bulb, music speakers on top of the bookshelf- it’s like a night club for one, with chemical fumes.

So – no accident – simply pure genius :)
Not just a ‘printable neg’, but a very interesting and thought-ptovoking ‘inventory’ of objects
(I think the foto gods only work together with those who qualify for genius….. ;)

  • laurenrabbit replied

I must disagree, I was tired, it was early and I really just wasn’t paying attention. But I’ll still take credit for it. :)

    O. Now I meant that to read “thought provoking”, not “thought-ptovoking”. I don’t know what “thought-ptovoking” is.

  • laurenrabbit replied

    I got that. :)

“The gods look after the good shots…. and loony’s… “( a line from a film, btw…)
...but isn’t serendipity in the darkroom a complete joy?
I can relate a couple that made my day, too.

    Total agreeement.

What’s solarization? I just like the pic – a jumble of limbs. Looks like they had a great time then just fell apart. Now that’s a party!

  • laurenrabbit replied

Technically solarization is the massive overexposure of a negative to the point where it reverses out. It is also applied to putting a negative or a print in developer and anywhere from 1/2 to 2/3 of the development time flashing it with light. The negative reverses itself, the print reverses as well but not to black and white, it reverses to all white/light areas becoming silver and all black/dark areas becoming very light/white. By definition doing that to a print is called the Sabattier effect but it falls into a catch-all. You can solarize in Photoshop which is occasionally fun and makes sense since everything in PS derived from the darkroom.
I think it, at times, could serve you well as backgrounds for t-shirt designs. :D

it is great and by such tricks of the photo gods, new methods are discovered.. check out how Lee Miller got solarization working for Man Ray

  • laurenrabbit replied

I know that story. I have always suspected it was made up. Besides solarization was around long before them- Lucia and Moholy Nagy, among others.
I tend to avoid it as if used often it becomes just a trick, but I do like surprises.

Love all of your work. Your mention of the dark room and little red light are starting to bring back memories.
