It was a hard fought battle, Gunnar versus that toad. Gunnar dug for minutes, bare hands fighting hard, North Texas dirt. Our ranch held many surprises that summer, and the proliferation of the toads, despite the drought of 2006 was one of them. They’d soak in the dog’s big cement water bowl, and swim, on occasion, in our horses’ watering pond. And Gunnar saw this toad scurry while building a road for his Tonka Dump truck, and did not stop until he held his prize.
The effort? Well worth the prize. The dirt under his nails, a reminder to me, his mother, that boys will always be boys, and that is why we love them. May he never lose this joy of discovery and this challenge against nature. Nor may I.
