I went for a walk in the forest yesterday
and made friends with a fawn.
Flashes of fire burned in my memory,
and I cursed Walt Disney for Bambi.
I forced the image out of my mind
and asked her what her name was.
She said Lucy, and I called her Lulu.
As I ran my hand along her back
and felt her floppy ears,
she looked at me with big doe eyes
– and I fell in love.
It was then that I decided to stay.
I asked her where her mother was,
and she said she was gathering dinner.
So I asked if she thought her mother would mind
if I stayed with them.
– It’ll only be for a few days.
We waited for mother to return
and I inquired about her life as a deer.
Yes… That’s what you are, isn’t it?
No, I’m a person! Can’t you tell?
I guess not. But you don’t look like me.
Well of course not, silly. You’re a deer.
I looked down and saw hooves,
and when I looked back up
she was gone.
Off in the distance I saw her running.
She had long, brown hair and ran like I did.
As I watched her get farther away
and her hair blow in the wind,
I called to her and begged her to come back
and visit me sometime.
She never looked back.
