Great image Larry, how do you get the white out on backdrop? Am shooting today and want same effect, regards
Larry Varley replied
Thanks Mark, Dani is shot against a white paper backdrop which extends across the floor, and is standing on a hard perspex sheet. There are black panels either side of the model out of shot to increase the contrast. 2 500 watt flash heads on the backdrop on full power, an umbrella hair light, and a diffused beauty dish key light, hope your shoot goes well.

GREAT SHOT, LARRY! And from the description of your setup, we should be working in the same studio! Exactly how I would have done it.
Larry Varley replied
Thanks David, yes the system works quite well, though I need to experiment a bit to stop the dark patches you can see on the floor, any ideas?

Hi Larry … I’m not sure what perspex sheet is? Is it like plexiglass? But I don’t see any dark patches on the floor except for the reflection of her shoes. Is this what you’re referring to? Were this done in a wet darkroom I’d dodge them out … which can also be done in Photo Shop or what ever program you use.
Larry Varley replied
Yes Perspex is Plexiglass, the image is as shot, if you look close there is a darkening especially on the left side of the image, from the foot to the edge of the image. I do my best to not photoshop these high key shots, it’s a personal challenge of mine to get the whole background blown out just using lighting

Hi Larry. I understand were you’re at. I’m the same way and I go nuts just tying to eliminate little things like this so I don’t have to use PS.
And, I see what you mean. Just some thoughts: the light from the two 500 flash heads aimed directly at the backdrop might be bouncing off it and hitting the blacks thus causing this slight gray area. By this I mean you may have them aimed in such a way that the light is reflecting toward the blacks. You might want to try aiming the strobes so the beams of light cross directly in front of the backdrop and not on it thus lessening the reflection. Also, have you tried moving the blacks around or doing the shot without them? Another possibility, do you have access to a large light box you could use directly overhead. This light from overhead would definitely give you the reflection in the floor but not the unwanted dark areas. This is what I use.

Hi Larry, great series, and I can see you’re really enjoying the new studio! Re the grey around her feet, I wonder if the black flags might be causing the problem? I don’t use this set-up myself, but I wonder if you need to reflect some light back near her feet. See this site for further explanation of what I mean http://www.zarias.com/?p=91 . Good luck with it – you’re getting some great results :)
