Rope
Rope spun from the wool of Rough Fell Sheep, which inhabit the hills and dales of the Lakes District in northern England.
There are many Rough Fell Sheep roaming wild and unchecked and until recently their wool was rarely used (- I think you can see why it wouldn’t make a cosey jumper or socks!!). However a project has been launched to use the wool – mainly for carpets. It will produce some interesting and extremely tough carpets.
This piece of rope shows just how strong and coarse the wool is. It was spun ‘on the spot’ at the Orton Fair from wool shorn from sheep at the show.
