Situset's Mother
Challenge Winner, Painters in Modern Times challenge “Its in the Eyes”
Watercolour on Arches Watercolour paper
Original Sold
The 83 year old mother of a lovely Lisu friend Situset. This old woman carries her great Grandchildren around and has no problem stepping around the uneven dirt paths that are the norm in her village. Earlier this year she was very sick and almost died. But now there is a sparkle and intensity in her eye again, dont you think?
Situset's Mother belongs to the following groups:
Fine Arts, The Eyes Have It and Water Media (Paintings by hand only) Available for sale asGreeting Cards and Matted Prints

Marion Chapman
what a fabulous portrait. love her mouth especially.
Lara Cooper
Thanks Marion, the computer image strips a bit out of this painting. She is quite striking in real life…it was diifficult to maintain the intenseness of her without compromising her softness, but in the end this worked quite well.
MissAnnArt
What a great portrait. I love all the colours that are in her skintone.
Lara Cooper
Thanks heaps. A bit of aqua dropped in makes for something a little different.
Stephie Butler
Stunning wok, fantastic portrait, you have captured so much character in this….........
Lara Cooper
Thankyou Stephie. She worked quite well. As explained in the blurb, she had so much character- intensity and softness all rolled into one, that it was that combination I was aiming to maintain. I think its the trick in portraiture, trying to capture a person, not just a picture. Easier said than done though, especially in watercolour…one slip and its lost.
Martin Mullen
Outstanding portrait – compliments to you!
Lara Cooper
Again, thanks Martin. Thats a very generous comment.

I love the way you stayed loose, yet got all that detail. I wish I could do portraits so well!!
Lara Cooper
Thanks again! Painting people, faces and figures is my favourite subject so I think that helps me paint with looseness, ie its more intuitive painting. Glad you like her, she’s one of my fav’s.

very deserving winner… congrats Lara… like the way the tight clenched mouth forces the focus onto the eyes. Perfect medium to catch the character, subtle & strong .. :)

Huazen
Lara Cooper replied
Thanks for your lovely comments Huazen….the risk of loose portraits is that they dont always work! Sometimes too loose! But yes, this one did work and is one of my favs too.
