Hannu was born in Kajaani. –
Kajaani is situated in the North of Finland’s prominent artists have originated. Already in his younger years Hannu showed a natural talent for drawing, painting and wood carving. A great lover of nature, animals and birds. Expressing a desire to follow a career in arts, much to the chagrin of his father, who had other aspirations for him? As Hannu gained in experience, he began to study native birds and animals and helped with complying drawings and illustrations for the wild life society, in printing a book on the same. Finding he had a natural talent he successfully exhibited across Finland his wood carvings, paintings and drawings.
For twelve months Hannu studied wood carving under the well known artist by the name of Niilo.
In the exclusive resort in the North of Finland known internationally as Korpisel’a’ntalo, Hannu had a permanent exhibition and through that gallery, his work has gone as far as America, Japan and Singapore.
In 1969 Hannu immigrated to Australia where he has successfully exhibited his work, not only wood carvings, but paintings, drawing designs for buildings and new model cars. His work is still going overseas and is in great demand.
In 1988 he worked in a shop in Sanctuary Cove, Queensland. Hannu’s wife Gunnel does the painting of the wood carvings. Hannu has lately specialized in wood carvings of Australian native birds carved into logs.
