Bamboo Walker
The mantis finally hatched. I wasn’t home when it happened, but there were hundreds crawling around on my ceiling. I used a bamboo skewer to collect them. I use these bugs to protect my pumpkins from bugs instead of insecticides. Next time I will use a butterfly container made of mesh. Took my three hours to get them all outside… and still found some more the next day crawling around on plants, chairs, ceiling, on the lamp shade… all in a pose to catch a bug.
If you would like to get some eggs.. they are about 5 dollars each.. but hatch in june… so they probably won’t be available again till Janurary.

Well done on raising the babies

Glenn Tuazon replied
THANks jesika, they are sure fun… first few days were good.. my captured ones at night would take them to our indoor light.. which had a rim.. I would place about ten on the floor.. they would climb up and catch bugs all night long since I kept the light on. Then in the morning, I would catch them and put them back in their cages. But once they reached a certain size.. they wanted out. ... I see you like butterflies as well.. have you grown them before? They are fun. If interested.. get painted lady catapillars in a container with food included. Try this link http://www.butterflyplace-ma.com/shopping.htm

Glenn, I’ve always liked this one. I like the story behind it too.
Glenn Tuazon replied
thanks elana.. I even hatched even more this year.. two egg sacs this time. For three days… the eggs kept on producing babies.. This time.. I let them hatch in a butterfly cage.. so no escapees.

I love this one it looks like it was sneaking around and got caught.
Glenn Tuazon replied
yes.. getting caught it looks like… holding still like we don’t see it… but look.. my arms are empty
Jen Cannella
Yep, definitely caught in the act! Fantastic shot!
Glenn Tuazon replied

this is just awesome. i love the symmetry of it all with the little guy perched on the end in a perfect profile. amazing
Glenn Tuazon replied
thankyou joe for taking a look. I used the sky as a light source.. and a bamboo skewer. I like symmetry as well.. and also the balancing act.
Paulette x
Superb shot, perfect composition.
Glenn Tuazon replied
Thankyou paulette for taking a look. This one doesn’t have as much movement… just a frozen moment of a pose.
Felicia Moore
Great Graphical capture! I love the pose that the bug is in as if he is checking you out!

To look ahead into ones journey can help us make decisions. SHould I move forward, over it.. under it… or just turn around and go back.

This is just wonderful, I love this shot and the story you wrote about it. Wow, 3 hours to get them all outside – well done! This is perfect as a silhouette, so brilliant!!!
Glenn Tuazon replied
I was thinking of the best way to show the detail.. the background didn’t help until I held the skewer to the sky. THank you ;)

Beautiful shot! Thank you, also, for the wonderful commentary that accompanies each of your pieces.

awesome work! a wonderful twist on the prevalent (but still very cool) mantis photography. :)
Sophie Shapiro
Wonderful work! The Mantis looks like a warrior who is willing to take the initiative and defend something. He’s acting independently but teaches us that he will lead and we will follow! This is just wonderful Lambchops! A real positive sense to this magnificent photograph!Sx
Glenn Tuazon
thankyou.. a warrior the mantis is… bravery is his path to catch bigger prey…. this I liked how plain.. but its also about the positions that we are accustomed to.
dinghysailor1

Hey Glenn! Greetings from Sarah and Don at livemantis.com
Long time no see. We still raise mantids and offer them at our site livemantis.com I now have two U.S. Native Species that you may want to photograph some time. These are not the normal common mantis, although we still offer live mantis insects and eggs on the common mantis. We offer eggs all through the year, ours hatch 30 to 40 days after placing them into room temp. As long as they are kept in the fridge they will not hatch so if you ever need to store a mantis egg long term (for up to one year) place them into the frige. $5 mantis eggs normally never hatch. Mantis eggs have a shelf life, $5 eggs are usually if not always beyond that shelf life of one year. Our eggs are from captive raised / captive bred well cared for mantids. So if you ever need any more mantids, just give us a visit at http://www.livemantis.com Be sure to reply if you are interested in any of the more rare mantids, they look alot different than the common ones. The bark mantis is arrowhead shaped and silver to white in color! The carolina mantis (stagmomantis U.S. native species) is smaller than the common mantis with two yellow and black dots on the wings and the mantids themselved are all different colors from black and green to pastel greenish yellow! I would post some pics here but I can not see how, I may post a sales page here and send you the link for the purpose of your viewing the photos. My pics are not as nice as yours, you are a great photographer! I may send a few mantids in the future free for you in exchange for some high quality pics of them to post on my site:) Reply when time allows. Sarah and Don at livemantis.com
