Artist's Description

There are hundreds of locks attached to these ropes in between poles next to the Ponte Vecchio on the Arno River in Florence, Italy. As you walk from the Palazzo Vecchio to the bridge you will see these chains of locks. Each lock has the names of each ‘lover’ on it and it is customary to throw the key into the river. “Love Padlocks” are a custom by which sweethearts affix padlocks to a fence or similar public fixture to symbolize their love. Most common place of Love padlocks are railings of the bridges. It is suggested that the custom of ‘locking a padlock and throwing away the key’ probably originated in China.
