Mangrove at Sunrise by Kym Howard
Clear

Woke at 4.30 am this morning after spending an evening with friends. I quickly dressed drove down to the bay and captured a sunrise. After the sun rose I captured this image of the Mangrove Tree. Long exposure of 23 seconds. At 17 seconds with my camera set to Manual on Bulb I rotated the lens barrel back to 55 mm and then back to 18 mm again to create this zoom effect.

Canon EOS 500d
F20
ISO 100
ND400 Filter plus 1/2 grad ND2
Long exposure of 23 seconds
zoomed barrel at 17 second exposure mark

Golly gosh gumdrops! Very creative and effective outcome, Kym! Have not seen the ND x400 used this way before. :)

  • Hey me neither! LOL I took several images this morning & at the last minute before going back for breakfast and a much needed coffee I thought I might zoom the barrel and see what happens. I really surprised myself on this one. Love to see you try this out also. I set my camera to Liveview so I can watch the timer count down easily I thought after 17 seconds the image would be nicely captured on the sensor and it was really just a quick zoom back and forward at the very last few seconds of the exposure.
