The Colosseum is a truly spectacular building which began construction in 72AD under the orders of Emperor Vespasian. It was built on the site of a lake, which was drained for the purpose of erecting the colosseum! The stone was hauled from the quarries at Tivoli, 17 miles away. 8 years later 100 days of continuous games were held at the Colosseum in an inauguration by Vespasians son Titus and then the Colosseum was finally finished by Domitian, Titus’s brother! The colosseum had a capacity of about 70,000 people, 60,000 seated and 10,000 standing and all could enter swiftly due to the clever design. Imagine not queuing!!!!!!!!
